A Day With Charlotte Mason

Strategically Curated and Flexible Schedules

Homeschool schedules offer the flexibility to be as relaxed or structured as desired, as long as there is compliance with state educational requirements: 180 days of instruction, 4.5 hours each day, totaling a minimum of 810 hours per year. This flexibility allows families to tailor their schedules to what works best for them, rather than adhering to a rigid timetable. While traditional school schedules assign specific times for each subject and breaks throughout the day, homeschooling provides the opportunity to create a customized approach. Therefore, it is essential for families in a homeschooling pod to collaborate with the teacher to design a schedule that balances flexibility and structure, including agreed upon start and end times. This adaptability is one of the key advantages of homeschooling, enabling families to create the most effective learning environment and strategies for success.

Within this flexible framework, subjects such as Math, Phonics, and Grammar are scheduled to ensure optimal learning outcomes. These subjects require one-on-one attention with each child, so they are strategically taught after group lessons that include journaling activities. This set-up allows children to work independently in their journals while the teacher is providing individual instruction. Establishing consistent routines within this schedule helps provide structure and predictability, enabling children to understand what to expect each day. Adhering to a regular schedule not only supports effective learning but also teaches children to prioritize tasks, manage their time, and take ownership of their education. This structured approach becomes particularly beneficial when teaching multiple children.
